On April 12th 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first
human being to leave Earth's atmosphere and venture into space. When he returned, 108 minutes later, he was the most famous man in the world - and a powerful symbol for the success of the Communist system.
But despite his fame, little is known of the man himself, and of the amazing personal odyssey from peasant's son to international icon. Even less well known is what happened afterwards,
when drink, women and a growing disillusionment with the Soviet system culminated in the mysterious air crash that cut short his life.
